Everyday new electronic paper strategies are affecting business applications, business process, and workflow. Increasingly, there is a drive to unify management and access to information in the enterprise through electronic paper. Microsoft's new XML Paper specification (XPS) describes electronic paper in a way that can be read by hardware, read by software, and read by humans. In the future, XPS will become an integral part of how the world processes information.

In a recent July 2009 a Microsoft representative noted, "Microsoft does see OpenXPS as a key foundation for the printing and document ecosystem and is very pleased to see the format emerge as a formal standard. We’re looking forward to working across industry to see how best to update the ecosystem to OpenXPS."
